It has been going through my mind all weekend. I hadn't heard it in a very long time, and I didn't realize I had missed it!
With love,
MarkAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04880005787497441395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7217199.post-1146376614227367322006-04-29T22:56:00.000-07:002006-04-29T22:56:00.000-07:00Hi, Ricky. Thanks for introducing me to David Roche's site.

JohanJohan Maurerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13771067774042071617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7217199.post-1146281672586727372006-04-28T20:34:00.000-07:002006-04-28T20:34:00.000-07:00"I surrender 12%" reminds me of David Roche's Chur..."I surrender 12%" reminds me of David Roche's Church of 80% Sincerity. (described here by Anne Lamott: http://www.davidroche.com/lamott.htm )

I'm also reminded that, If I understand correctly, "Islam" means surrender.

RickyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7217199.post-1146245309073219922006-04-28T10:28:00.000-07:002006-04-28T10:28:00.000-07:00I think my tendency toward critical self-examinati...I think my tendency toward critical self-examination when singing the "take my life and let it be" (Frances R Havergal) genre of hymns is really probably a variation on that theme. People certainly don't sing them thinking that they're 100% accurately describing themselves, nor are they preening in front of others, who after all are singing the same words! So, yes, I think that you're right about what is going on, and it's not a bad thing.

By the way, I change words with wild abandon during hymns, although I admit I don't have much volume when I sing. I also don't sing whole verses if I have a stop in my heart about those verses. But there are other hymns and choruses that some would ridicule as hopelessly saccharine or individualistic, that I sing with great joy and tears streaming down my face.

I very much appreciate your weblog, by the way.

JohanJohan Maurerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13771067774042071617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7217199.post-1146226822891608672006-04-28T05:20:00.000-07:002006-04-28T05:20:00.000-07:00When I sing hymns like that, I guess I don't see i...When I sing hymns like that, I guess I don't see it as dishonest, even though I along with everyone else don't surrender perfectly . . . what I (and I bet most folks) am doing when I sing that is praying for it to be true, or at least, during the words of the song, finding the strength to let go just a little more.

Just my $.02. :-)Rosemaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11867502577351038428noreply@blogger.com
